In 2007,
we celebrated
our 30th Anniversary of serving the
residents in our EMS District.
While EMS had seen many changes over these years, we have
never changed our primary focus of delivering the
highest quality EMS care available in a compassionate
and personal way.
EMS began in 1977 under the direction of the San Juan
District 3 Fire Department as the San Juan Aid Unit.
Frank Wilson served as the first Aid Captain, later
becoming the second Chief.
In 1990, the San Juan Aid Unit
was transitioned out of the Fire Department and placed
under the San Juan County Public Hospital District No. 1
Board of commissioners which also oversees the Inter
Island Medical Center.
In 2007, San Juan Island EMS partnered with
Island Air to form Island Air Ambulance, the first
Cessna 206 fixed wing BLS FAA approved service in the
continental US.
